Last Day of 4

So, today is the last day that N will be 4.  Somehow, 5 sounds so old and wise.

Last night I asked Nathanael what was his favorite part of being 4.  I was:

1)  Swimming (wow!)

2) Vacation

3)  Fishing

His least favorite part?  Trying new things.  This is not surprising from a kid who has transition issues.  Anyway, I then reminded him that he tried swimming this year (in fact he was petrified, scared to death scared of it) this past year.  That put his brain into a bit of a processing spin and nothing came out the other side.

Other milestones this year:

1)  Reading.  I think I mentioned, he’s good at it.  I LOVE this.  We can take no credit for this as we are terrificly bad at reading to him.  He asks us, we don’t initiate.

2) Writing.  Really quite improved.  If you look really closely at the below, you will see can make out “black spiderman mask.”  No idea on the rest.

3)  Engagment.  He’s a pretty social kid.  It takes a while for him to warm up to you but if you can make him laugh, you’re in.

4) Swimming.  Drama but he now loves it.

5) School.  He just loves his montessori and if he’s into it, I’m into it.

What a day.

Birthday list . . .

N has quite figured out how to say remember and it is always Bemember… So I am desperately trying to Bemember four.

Four was the year n learned to swim. It was so challenging and hard and a nightmare for me that first day. If I thought about it or too long I would tear up. But now he is doing so well and increasingly comfortable. He is not out of the woods yet but monumental progress has been made.

Four was the year n learned to read. His reading level is truly mind numbing to me – I am pretty convinced he is reading well beyond his age – but what I really care about is that he loves it.

Four is the year that his gentle heart stayed gentle. We introduced him to sports (because he is strong) but his gentle heart doesn’t really want to be competitive. He doesn’t like to lose but he is loosing because he can’t be in it to Win it. We will see how this changes over time but for now, the neighbor boy always outruns and outplays him and that is ok (but after 30 minutes it is drama)

While we have a week left of four I am going to do my best to remember it. It was such a big year, filled with so much love that I am quite sad to see it go. It is too much to expect that 5 will have as many joys as well.
