More than 4, less than 5

We have seemed to skim along the winter that never was and now it is may.

We spend a fair amount of time discussing spiderman, the avengers and “how old is batman?”. As a child, I found all the superheroes not my thing but I see the important role it plays in N’s life. He really thinks about them and says things like “I need to take photos for mr Jameson” (channelling Peter Parker )

He got busted for a jail break at school last – girls chasing him and so he and his little buddy decided to hop the fences. That will get you 1.5 weeks of no playing on the basketball court (could still use the play ground)

N really loves his buddy h next door and he devotes a significant amount of think time to whether h will be outside and if he could please check.

His letters are really improving and his reading seems excellent. I had benjamin button on pause (the title shows up) and he was easily able to pronounce it by figuring out the parts. I distinctly remember being super excited to read 5 letter words in first grade (cat/dog etc were beginning to wear on my kindergarden brain). It is thrilling to see his brain in action.

We have started to really tackle his deep fear of swimming (yes, I will take credit / guilt for that one eg for whatever will be known as the great Edina pool incident eg “mommy I fell and was under the water and freaking and scared and you were late to help me). The first swimming lesson in jan was misery for us both – he got his toe in with great drama and tears all around. But slowly we are progressing to the point that his teacher told us that his body was really relaxing while swimming (not stiff as a scared little boy). Joe has done the majority of swim classes with him and it is wonderful to see the slow, but steady, progress.

Tita seems to be really hitting her grove at de and I really respect the school. I believe that some of their teaching practices are a bit behind Edina but the small student body, genuinely caring leadership, and diversity has made a big difference. I love that she is loving the great gatsby – terrific! She went to prom with a great boy and I was happy for her.
