At the park.  We’ve started a weekly gym class at the little gym and he’s loving it.  It’s so much fun to see him run around with such joy and enthusiasm on his face.  He hates the beginning group stuff but loves all of the on his own stuff.  He’s actually quite good – he’s strong and coordinated.  He can almost hang from the bars for a 10 count.

Being Present

I think the hardest thing about being a working mom (and perhaps a non-working mom but I have no experience with that so I don’t know) is being present at the end of the day. Honestly, there are some evenings when I just want to surf the web and have N watch Backyardigans. And, it’s an easy solution but I know it’s wrong. OK, every once in a while it’s fine, but it’s easy to sink into habits and that’s not a good one.
I am really trying to pull myself out of the lull. I can tell how much N just thrives with engagement and once I get a smile, I am present. But, boy, there are days when it’s work! Why is it so hard to be a working mom sometimes?

Why? Mamma.

Why?  Why can’t I answer why?

We got our first real why inquisition last week-end.  We need to change your diaper.  Why?  Because it’s messy?  Why?  Because you went to the bathroom.  Why?  You get the idea.  Why?

We also seem to have an endless stream of mommas.  It’s has a variation – mama, mamamammamamma, ma, mommy, mommmyyyyyy etc.  Nathanael says it all day, pretty much when he has any sort of need, mamma is associated with it.  Even when he has no need, he still says momma.  N will walk up to Joe and say Momma!  I know that sometimes he’s just pulling Joe’s chain and other times, it’s just the language of N’s communication.

One thing N seems to have learned pretty well – hold on to your food or the doggy will eat it.  As I type this, N has a breakfast bar held preciously in his hand (fully covered) half in his mouth, have guarded from the doggy.  He’s been sitting like that for 20 minutes (entire Backyardigans).  Time to go, Backyardigans is ovah!

Forever Family Day

Today is our Forever Family Day.  It’s amazing to me to think that one year ago today, Nathanael was no longer a theoretical, but a reality of a family.  It makes me teary eyed just to think of it.

I know that everyone thinks there kid is something else and they are right, every kid is something else.  But, Nathanael is our something else.  He’s very curious, cautious, strong willed and independent.  He’s also a big cuddler. He’s also a bit bi-polar right now – some moments as happy as happy can be and then 30 seconds later, the world is collapsing around him.  I figure, if his mood isn’t working for you, wait 30 seconds because it will change.

It’s expected for me to say, I can’t believe how fast the year has gone but it’s true.  I feel like I’m just holding on while he charges ahead.  It’s exciting and thrilling but there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think I need to remember this moment because he’ll be on to the next thing soon.    And I worry so desperately about his future and how to best prepare him for the world out there.  I don’t think loving him is enough, I think we need to teach him coping skills, social skills, and so much else.  I’m not quite sure how to do this but I imagine we’ll just to work through it.  For now, I know he is well bonded to us, trusts us, and is on track developmentally and I guess that’s what we can ask for right now.
