FAQ Why Guatemala vs. a domestic adoption?
It was the program that best fit our situation and needs.
How long will it take?
We don’t know. It’s the velvet glove of bureaucracy hard at work. Our hope is that he is home by his first birthday (August 22) but we have not way of knowing if that’s viable.
I’ve heard they closed Guatemala adoptions, is this true?
Yes, as of December 31st, there are no new referrals. We believe we have been grandfathered in.
All the news reports say Guatemalan adoptions are corrupt, what’s the deal?
There are some bad situations that have happened in a small amount of cases. We have every confidence in our agency and our lawyer that our adoption in on the up and up. The news media likes stories like this, they make good copy.
We also believe that the process should change. We believe the primary issue with the old process is that the lawyers respresent us and the birth mothers and therefore, there is a lack of transparency. There are many good lawyers (like ours) but like most things, a few rotten apples spoil the bunch.
Our biggest concern is that the process won’t change for the better. This isn’t the US, this is a very poor third world country where the vast majority of citizens live in poverty. UNICEF has other issues with Guatemalan adoptions related to money changing hands etc. We don’t share these concerns (but would love for it to be less expensive!) Private adoptions in the US are fraught with many of these same issues as in Guatemala.
